Holy Week Walking Pilgrimage

Missions Santa Clara - San Jose - Sonoma - San Rafael - Dolores San Francisco

Come walk and pray the final walking leg of the Camino de California Lenten Walking Pilgrimage on an epic journey from Mission Santa Clara to Mission San Jose, joining the Diocese of Santa Rosa at Mission Sonoma and Mission San Rafael, and celebrating the 250th Jubilee of the dedication of Mission San Francisco de Asis by walking the new Camino de San Francisco on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Join us for any part or length of this walking pilgrimage.

To join us, fill out a contact form and indicate your interest. Pilgrim accommodations are provided. We will shuttle pilgrim vehicles and carpool together. You can reach walking guide Jeff Russell at jr@caminodecalifornia.org

ITINERARY

  • Optional Overnite Stay

    4:30pm Arrive at the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal San Junipero Serra Friary, 1631 62d Ave, Oakland.

    ‍5:00pm Holy Hour

    6:00pm Dinner

    Pilgrim vehicles park overnite at the Friary. Pilgrim beds and cot space available.

  • 9:15am Meet at the In n Out Burger Parking Lot, Milpitas, 50 Ranch Dr, Milpitas. Bathrooms available at the Hilton Garden Inn (thru Lobby on the left). Drive 1-2 carpools to Mission Santa Clara, B-E Main Parking Structure. Bathrooms at Mission Santa Clara are outside on the left side of the Mission.

    10:00am Sunday Mass Mission Santa Clara.

    11:00am Pastor’s Pilgrim’s Blessing. Andrew Chai, Mission Director, will be on hand to stamp Camino Pilgrim passports, available from JR.

    Walk 7.5mi to In n Out Burger.

    Stop at mile marker 1.7mi Memorial Cross Park (2nd Location of Mission Santa Clara), Subway and 76 Restroom stop across the street, 4

    .5mi Riverview Public Restrooms.

    2:30/3:00pm Arrive In N Out Burger. Pilgrims carpool to pick up the vehicles at Mission Santa Clara and back to the CFR Oakland Friary for 5:00pm Holy Hour, 6:00pm Dinner.

    Save dinner and pick up Full Camino Pilgrims that walked to Mission San Jose.

    2027 Full Camino Pilgrim Option - 16 miles total

    Continue Walking 8.5mi to Mission San Jose.

    Bathrooms avail at mile marker 11.8mi Courtyard Fremont Restrooms, 13.1 Carl’s Jr, CVS or 15.9 Starbuck’s.

    6:00/7:00pm Arrive at Mission San Jose. Get picked up by other pilgrims from Oakland, return to either Santa Clara University or CFR Oakland Friary. Eat dinner saved for you.

  • 7:15am: Meet and drop 1-2 pilgrim vehicles at St Clement Catholic Church, 700 Calhoun St, Hayward. Drive 1-2 pilgrim carpool vehicles to Mission San Jose.

    8:00am: Mass at Mission San Jose
    8:30am: Pastor’s Pilgrim Blessing, Deacon will have the Pilgrim Passport Mission stamp. Departure.

    Bathrooms are in the Main Church at the Mission and at a 76 Gas Station (2.5mi).

    11:00am Pray at Corpus Christi Church Rosary Garden (4.6 mi). For pilgrims only wanting to walk this distance, this is a good opportunity to Uber or carpool back to the Oakland CFR Friary.

    2:30pm Continue walking and arrive at St Clement Catholic Church (11.5mi). Pray at the chapel. Emilio Nasario will host us.

    Carpool to retrieve pilgrim vehicles at Mission San Jose, head to Oakland CFR Friary. 5:00pm Holy Hour, 6:00pm Dinner. 17 Camino pilgrims expected for dinner! Make and wrap breakfast burritos for the following day.

    2027 Full Camino Pilgrim Option

    Walk an additional 12 miles to the CFR Oakland Friary. Arrival will likely be 8:30pm. We’ll save you dinner.

  • 8:00-9:15am Pilgrims drive all vehicles to Napa Valley Marina. Volunteer driver takes JR’s truck to Napa Marina. Lynn Lubamersky + friend pick up pilgrims at Vallejo Marina at 9:20am.

    10:00am: Pilgrimage to Mission Sonoma. 14 miles total.

    Huichinca Creek Wildlife Area. Hudeman Slough Wetlands. Cross Highway 12. Walk thru Sonoma via 8th St, Napa Rd and Broadway.

    5:30pm Arrive Mission San Francisco Solano

    The path follows wetlands along the Bay.

    Full Camino Pilgrim Option

    6:00-7:15am: Camino pilgrims walk 1.1mi to Coliseum BART to Lake Merritt BART, walk 1mi to the Oakland Ferry Terminal.

    7:35-8:00am: Take the Oakland Ferry to SF Terminal Gate E.

    8:20-9:20am: Take the SF Ferry to Vallejo Municipal Marina. Meet Lynn Lubamersky and friend, the pilgrim drivers waiting here and carpool to the Napa Valley Marina.

    Arrive at Mission Sonoma. Pray. No host Pilgrim Dinner at the nearby Mary’s Pizza Shack. Some pilgrims carpool to retrieve vehicles from the Napa Marina.

    Accommodations: St Francis Solano Catholic Church Parish Hall.

  • 6:30-7:25am: Drive Pilgrim vehicles to the public parking lot at 1016 C St, near Mission San Rafael. Paid parking.

    7:30-8:15am: Pilgrims carpool or share an Uber to St Francis Solano Catholic Church.

    8:30am: Bishop Vann’s Mass at St Francis Solano Church

    Walk 4 miles through Sonoma to Leveroni Rd and Temelec. Walk 6 miles along Hwy 116 and Old Adobe Rd into Petaluma. Walk 3.5 miles to Wiseman Park to St James Church.

    4:00pm Pray at St James Church. Walk 2miles to the Petaluma Downtown SMART Station.

    5:38pm Take the SMART train to San Rafael.

    6:30pm Arrive Mission San Rafael Arcangel. Pray. JR collects the Camino de San Francisco pilgrim passports to make available for $10. Pick up vehicles and carpool to collect any vehicles at St Francis Solano. No Host Dinner at Casa Manana, 711 D St, San Rafael. We have reserved seating for 20 outside. Consider buying a breakfast burrito to go for the morning.

    Accommodations: Pilgrims sleep at the parish hall at St Rita’s Church in Fairfax, CA. Camino de California provides 17 cots.

  • CAMINO DE SAN FRANCISCO

    7:20 Stephen M, John R, Josh K, Thomas park cars at the Golden Gate Bridge West Side parking lot and carpool with Jeff R. Paid parking. Carpool back to Mission San Rafael via Conzelman Rd under Hwy 1 to North 101.

    8:00am Morning Prayer (Lauds) at Mission San Rafael and Exposition of the Eucharist.

    8:30am Pastor’s Pilgrim Blessing + Departure. Walk 3.6mi to Saint Patrick Church in Larkspur

    10:00am Depart St Patrick Church and Walk 12mi to Golden Gate Bridge.

    12:00 ½ Day pilgrims join at Harrison Skatepark.

    4:00pm Arrive at the Golden Gate Bridge Overlook. Take a group picture.

    4:15-4:45pm Carpool back to Mission San Rafael. Collect pilgrim vehicles from Mission San Rafael and drive 15 min to St Rita’s Catholic Church. Park pilgrim vehicles at St Rita’s.

    5:15-6:15pm $25 Pilgrim Dinner at the Parish Hall Kitchen from Amelie Cafe.

    7:00pm Holy Thursday Mass (Institution of the Eucharist and Washing of the Feet) + Adoration - St Rita’s Catholic Church. Adoration available until 11:30pm.

    Accommodations: Male pilgrims sleep at the parish hall at St Rita’s Church in Fairfax, CA. Camino de California provides 17 cots. Female pilgrims hosted by Elise.

  • CAMINO DE SAN FRANCISCO

    6:00-6:45am Drive pilgrim vehicles to Mission San Francisco parking lot (need the parking lot gate opened).

    7:00-7:25am Carpool or Uber to the H Dana Bowers Golden Gate parking lot.

    OR 6:45-7:45am Drive straight from St Rita’s to the Golden Gate Bridge West or East Parking Lot and pay for parking. Meet on the East Side large parking lot overlook.

    7:30am Pilgrim Departure. Walk and pray the Rosary for CA in small groups on the Golden Gate Bridge. Passport stamp at the Visitor’s Center and restroom available. Walk 5.9mi to Sts Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco.

    10:30am Walk 2 blocks to arrive at the National Shrine of St Francis.

    11:00-12:30pm Walk 3mi to Mission Dolores.

    12:30pm Walk 1.5mi to Mission Basilica San Francisco de Asis.

    12:30 Join the Mission Dolores Stations of the Cross and 7 Last Words in progress (starts at Noon). Pray in the Mission and the Mission Basilica.

    Drive or walk to St Mary’s Cathedral if you’d like to collect the last Camino de SF stamp. Might need to confirm they are open.

    Holy Week Pilgrimage Concludes.

    Pilgrim cars are already in the Mission Basilica parking lot. Carpool to collect any pilgrim vehicles at the Golden Gate H Dana Bowers Rest Area.
